Vendors & Types

Classifying your infrastructure by manufacturer and model

    Vendors

Vendors represent the hardware and software suppliers in your environment — companies like Cisco, Dell, HPE, Juniper, Fortinet, or Microsoft. A vendor record has a name and serves as a grouping container for device types.

    Types

Types represent specific device models or product lines belonging to a vendor. For example, under the vendor "Cisco Systems" you might create types such as "Catalyst 9300", "ASA 5525-X", or "ISR 4331". Each type has a name and belongs to a parent vendor.

    How They Are Used

Vendors and types are used when classifying configuration items. When you create or edit an asset, you can optionally assign a device type. The type carries its vendor relationship, so selecting a type automatically associates the asset with the correct vendor.

    This classification helps with:

    • Filtering assets by manufacturer or model.
    • Understanding which vendor equipment is deployed where.
    • Identifying assets affected by vendor-specific vulnerabilities or advisories.

    Simple Lookup Tables

Both vendors and types are straightforward reference lists. Vendors contain types (one vendor can have many types), and types are assigned to configuration items. They support archiving, so removing a vendor or type does not break existing asset references.
